How to perform a safe sensor function test on the ARIOT home safety device after installation or firmware update.
Before you test
Notify all household members before running a sensor test. The audible alarm will activate at full volume. Young children and people with sound sensitivity should be aware.
Pre-test checks:
- The device shows a steady indicator light (not blinking). A blinking light indicates a fault condition — resolve the fault before testing.
- The device has been powered for at least 60 minutes. Some sensors require a warm-up period to reach calibrated accuracy.
- The companion app is installed and the device is showing Online status.
Smoke sensor test
The smoke sensor is a photoelectric type. Use a purpose-made smoke test canister for this test. Do not use an open flame, cigarettes, or incense sticks — these can contaminate the sensor chamber and affect long-term accuracy.
Procedure:
- Hold the test canister a short distance below the device, with the nozzle pointing upward toward the smoke inlet.
- Spray a 2-second burst.
- The alarm should activate within 10 seconds.
If the alarm does not activate within 30 seconds, do not spray again immediately. Allow 60 seconds for the smoke to clear, then repeat once. If the test still fails on the second attempt, the smoke sensor may require replacement. Contact support with the serial number and failure details.
Clearing the alarm: press the Silence button on the device or tap Silence in the app. Allow 5 minutes for the sensor to reset before running another test.
Gas sensor test
The gas sensor detects combustible gases (LPG, methane) and carbon monoxide at calibrated concentration thresholds. Use a purpose-made gas test spray for this test. Do not use an open lighter or match — this is a fire hazard and will not produce a controlled, reproducible test.
Procedure:
- Hold the test spray a short distance from the device, directed at the gas inlet vent.
- Spray a 1-second burst.
- The gas alarm LED (red) and siren should activate within 5 seconds.
If the alarm does not activate within 15 seconds, allow 2 minutes for residual gas to disperse, then test once more. A second failure may indicate sensor degradation — contact support.
Safety note: conduct gas sensor tests in a ventilated space. Open a window before testing and close it only after the sensor returns to normal (steady green indicator).
App notification test
After triggering either alarm, verify that the companion app received a push notification.
Expected behaviour:
- Alarm triggers on device.
- Device sends the alert to the cloud as soon as connectivity allows.
- App receives push notification within 60 seconds of the alarm trigger.
If notification does not arrive within 60 seconds, check:
- The device shows Online in the app (loss of Wi-Fi prevents notification delivery).
- App notifications for the ARIOT app are not muted in your phone's notification settings.
- The app is not in a suspended background state (some Android manufacturers aggressively kill background apps — check your phone's battery optimisation settings).
- The backend notification service is not in a scheduled maintenance window (announced via the support hub).
If the device is online and notifications are enabled but not arriving, contact support with the device serial number and the approximate time of the failed test.
